This listing is for an original Apple Macintosh Performa 6400/180,
a mid‑1990s PowerPC‑based desktop Macintosh introduced in 1996.
Item Overview
At the time of inspection, the system powered on and successfully booted into
Mac OS 8.1.
The original hard drive was not detected on first power‑up.
Because this model uses standard IDE storage, a known‑working 4.3 GB IDE
hard drive was installed to allow testing.
Following drive installation, the system booted normally from a Mac OS installation CD
(not included), and a clean installation of Mac OS 8.1 was completed.
Condition & Testing
- Boots successfully into Mac OS 8.1
- 4.3 GB IDE hard drive installed
- CD‑ROM drive booted the system; somewhat noisy during use
- System date and time incorrect, indicating a depleted PRAM battery
- Floppy drive not tested
During case removal for servicing, both front panel release clips broke.
This is a common failure on Performa and Power Macintosh systems of this era due to
age‑related plastic brittleness.
All broken plastic pieces are included with the system.
A third‑party PCI network card is installed, but it does not appear in Mac OS 8.1.
It may require a newer version of Mac OS or a specific driver.
Networking functionality was not tested further.
