Up for sale is my 2016 Ram Promaster City Wagon SLT passenger/cargo minivan. It was purchased with 113K miles on it in February 2020 and it now has 198K miles – the number of miles may be increasing as the van will still be used occasionally until sold. It was being used in a small IT business and since 113K miles has always been driven by the owner and has had regular maintenance and repairs done and has served well! I have now sourced a newer vehicle with a lot fewer miles on it and now have one vehicle too many, so this one is for sale. Hope someone out there can put it to good use.
In February of 2020, the van was purchased with the knowledge that it had overheated (due to a failure of the cooling fan – which Stellantis replaced under a recall – but it was too late) – it was a former LabCorp van (judging from the shadows left on the side after the removal of the decals). And, sure enough, from 113K to 120K miles, I kept having to put spark plugs into cylinder #2 due to fouling from the coolant leaking into cylinder #2. My mechanic advised that this was probably due to the overheating causing a failure of the head gasket. After checking several junkyards, LKQ in Dunfries, VA had a 2.4L motor with 10K miles on it and a transmission with 15 miles, yes, 15 miles – (the salesperson at LKQ said it was part of a train derailment of brand new vans that they bought from an insurance company and he said he had already sold the engine from that van). So, replacing the engine and transmission being around the same labor as a head gasket job and since such a low mileage engine and transmission were available fairly inexpensively, I had the engine and transmission replaced at 120K miles with the low mileage engine and transmission in June 2020. So, even though the van has 198K miles, the engine and transmission have about 88K and 78K respectively.
At 190K miles, the ‘maniverter’ – combination catalytic converter and exhaust manifold – were replaced under a recall by Stellantis.
The last repairs done to it were replacing the torque strut mount to remedy a clunking sound and replacing the evaporative purge valve solenoid to correct a check engine code.
The tires are in good shape – 80K mile tires installed when the van had 155K miles, so they should run another 36K or so. The tires have been rotated and the alignment corrected about every oil change. The battery was replaced with a 5 year warranty Interstate battery in October of 2022. The oil & filter has been changed every time the van indicated it was time to change it with synthetic – about every 7K miles. It has almost always had ‘Top Tier’ fuel with the extra detergent run in it (usually from Shell or Citgo).
There is a small dent in the rear passenger side quarter panel – you can see this in the pictures. There is also a dent on the interior driver’s side wheel well in the back – this is also visible in the pictures. There are probably other imperfections in the body – nicks and spots here and there – hey, it’s got almost 200K miles on it!
The A/C has a leak in one or two of the lines – my mechanic added more refrigerant to the system and it blows cold, but you will need to replace at least two of the lines – or perhaps just gaskets – to properly repair it. However, you may make it through the rest of this summer as is, or maybe not.
